Time Magazine recently wrote a piece about 37signals, a small company that creates software to help small businesses collaborate. The article talks about their philosophy of staying small. Jason Fried, the founder of the company, puts it this way…
Fried admits the 37signals team is stretched thin handling its users’ demands. He insists that the bigger a staff gets, the slower it moves. “A lot of teams have problems with overcollaboration,” he says. “Too much teamwork, too many cooks in the kitchen, too many people making decisions.”
We at upNext are regular users of their products, especially Basecamp. The philosophy of being able to collaborate without wasting time in meetings and communication overhead is something we take to heart around here.

We just posted a couple of examples of our sports open and graphics packages that we do here at upNext. When we put together a sports elements package, we handle not only the design work but we also work with the producers to create enough bits and pieces so the package will last for a number of years, even as the needs of the show change. We will also assess the equipment that the show will be produced with, and design everything with the end user in mind.
If you have a sports or television project that could use a new graphics and elements package to take it to the next level, send us an email and put our team to work making your show the best it can be.

Great news came into the upNext virtual office today. Our project producer, Kim Irvine, has been named the new director of the weekend Global National. Global National is the most watched national newscast in Canada. Luckily for us, when she’s not running big-time television shows, Kim will continue her amazing work here at upNext. Global couldn’t have picked a better director, and a better person. So for those of you who have worked with her, and those of you who will, we wish her all the best.

For the past week I’ve had the flu, and just now coming out the other side, I’ve been reminded of a few of life’s great truths.
1. You will always get sick when it’s least convenient, but it’s never really a good time anyway.
2. Daytime television has never been the same since the retirement of Phil Donahue
3. When you’re dehydrated, Gatorade always does the trick.
4. If your two-year old brings home a disease from daycare, just stock up on the supplies of drinks and Kleenex and hunker down for the inevitable.
5. My wife Amber is a saint when people around her are sick.
I hope to get back to everyone from last week quite soon, and it’s great to be vertical again.
