What Are We Doing?
I seem to have gotten a much larger response than usual from my last blog post. It seems that people want to hear less about media news tidbits, and more about the story and working philosophy of upNext. It’s something that I suspected, but something I think I secretly resisted. It’s more involved to write about the company experience than industry trends. More importantly, it also forces me to think more deeply about the kind of company we’re building.
When I write about upNext the company, putting it down in a blog creates a sense of permanence. The feeling is if I write it down here, it’s a decision on a particular course of action. It’s something that I would like to avoid, but the process of thinking about where we’re heading and communicating that is probably the most important job I have.
upNext is in the business of producing media, which is a field that is in constant motion. So while upNext will be making choices along the way, the overarching business philosophy that we’ll explore here will give us that sense of permanence.
One company that has managed to communicate their business values as the company has grown is 37 Signals, the people that create the Basecamp project management system that lies at the heart of upNext Media’s website. Their blog, known as Signal to Noise accomplishes the goal of communicating company values in an active dialogue with partners and customers. It’s something to strive for.
